It is designed to fit snugly in the hand while allowing the practitioner to continuously alter the breadth of contact by rocking the instrument to change the radius of the contact to suit the area being treated. The design of the edge profile allows the practitioner to increase or reduce the intensity of the contact by merely changing the angle of tilt. It also has a notched zone to enhance lymphatic drainage. The channels allow the use of longer strokes in areas of oedema. Only one STMfish® tool is required to work on the entire body as opposed to multiple tools for Graston, ASTYM and SASTM Techniques. Both the stainless steel and aluminium versions may be sterilised using an autoclave or alcohol bath.

After many variations in shape and edge profile, he arrived at the current design which when applied correctly achieves excellent outcomes with minimal superficial trauma. The designer also experimented using a layer of fabric between the instrument and the skin as an alternative to a lubricant. A square of satin or fine weave cotton allows the transmission of the therapeutic “tissue wave” with even less superficial skin abrasion. This is particularly useful on hairy areas of skin.

Why our instruments cost more

Most other instruments are manufacured using drop forged or laser cut processes. Our instruments are produced in Australia by a local scientific engineering company. The process involves precise computer controlled milling of a 6mm 318 Surgical steel blank with a custom built profile cutter. Unlike other instruments,each side is milled separately. This is time consuming process, but produces a consistent working profile that is symmetrical on each side. Quality comes at a price.

IASTM Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation (IASTM) is very effective for the release of myofascial adhesions and scar tissue associated with a variety of soft tissue injuries ranging from lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) to post operative scar tissue reduction. It can also be used to stimulate blood flow to injured areas and assist with lymphatic drainage from inflamed areas. There are several “Western” based IASTM systems, such as; Graston Technique®, ASTYM treatment or Sound Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (SASTM).
